Close Call Against Mercia

Stafford B beat Mercia in a tight match on Wednesday 28th October. The B team have now won all of their 4 games. Over recent years the Wolverhampton Division 3 has been very competitive and all points are hard won.

Andrew Leadbetter was first to finish when he agreed a draw in a tight position. David Barker also gained a draw.  Although he was a pawn up, there were no chances to attempt a win without risking defeat. Stafford then went a board down as Guy De Visme, who was in a strong position overlooked a knight fork.  This was unfortunate as Guy's rooks were on the 7th rank threatening a mating attack.

Wins for Peter Evans and Denis Nesbitt secured a 3-2 victory.  Denis with the white pieces faced the Caro-Kann defence, this was a pleasant surprise for Denis who often plays the Caro-Kann as black.  Denis' superior endgame technique and his queenside pawn majority gave him the win.  Peter had to face a ferocious opening attack after his opponent played the Danish Gambit, but he kept his head and managed to win a bishop and exchange queens as the Mercia player tried too hard to attack.  After the attacks were contained, Peter managed to create enough pressure to win additional material.

Incidentally this was one of the quicker matches played with all games being over by 9:45
