Stafford B suffered their first loss of the season in the Wolverhampton League on Wednesday 24th of November.  Stafford were out played on the middle boards, but did better on Boards 1 and 5.
First to finish was Ray Hyde on Board 1, who managed to achieve a drawn position despite having his Kingside pawns obliterated in a sacrificial attack.   Geoff Cox then scored Stafford's only win of the night. He was able to advance his h-pawn up to row 6 to support a combination attack with his heavy pieces.
After that things went wrong. Denis Nesbitt lost a complicated rook and pawn endgame where the Boldmere board 2's queenside pawn majority proved decisive.  Peter Evans was finally mated in a 56 move game.  On subsequent analysis it was decided that Peter was always a move or two behind the game and most of his plans had been anticipated and countered.
So it fell to Guy de Visme, who could have taken a draw at any time, but in attempting to secure a share of the points for Stafford, he tried to make a win from a minimal advantage, which eventually cost him the game as his flag fell.
The first half of the season is now complete, we have to play the six reverse features by the end of March, starting at Rugeley in early December. The first house of the season has exceeded expectation; Played 6, Won 5, and only losing the match against Boldmere as described.
