Stafford B returned to the top of North Staffs Division 3 with a 3-1 win over bottom of the table Kidsgrove A last night.

Boris Ondrejkovic was making his debut on Board 4, playing not only his first match for Stafford, but also his first ever league chess match.

Unfortunately Boris went a piece down early in the game, having a knight trapped.  This was quickly followed by the loss of a bishop, but he battled on, taking the game further than may have been expected under the circumstances.  Although the game was lost, it was a brave fight from the early loss of material.

Boards 1 & 2 could easily have been drawn, but were played on to decisive endgames.  Andrew Leadbetter's game was one of opposite coloured bishops, but with Andrew managing to push 2 pawns through to the 7th rank, the decisive advantage was his.  Ken Wosniak continued his impressive season with an endgame win on board 1, pushing his overall performance for the season up to 70%.

Peter Evans was under pressure with his opponent pushing with a strong attack, but he survived by delivering a suprise mating attack 'out of the mist', leaving the final score at 3-1 to Stafford
